Nickel and cobalt are predominantly produced via the beneficiation and pyrometallurgical processing of nickel sulphide ores, and hydrometallurgical processing of nickel laterite ores. Nickel is recovered either as ferronickel (FeNi) from saprolite ores or as an intermediate mixed sulphide/hydroxide from limonite ores. Cobalt is recovered from nickel ores during the refining process of the intermediate products.
Nickel and Cobalt are used in various applications including alloys, the electrical industry and more recently in lithium batteries.Due to recent technological developments in electric vehicles and large scale battery storage, the demand for nickel and cobalt products has significantly increased.
