Complex and refractory gold ores are problematic, metallurgically challenging and require higher CAPEX, higher operating costs and sometimes lower overall gold recovery. Finding simple free milling gold ores are likely to be less common going forward. Refractory ores include physically locked gold, chemically locked or preg robbing ores.

The options currently available are flotation, roasting, ultra fine grinding, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation. These methods with their inherent advantages are discussed and new novel technology which may also be applied.

Specific plants where the respective technologies have been applied are referenced.
